Major corporations often don't want to seem like they're taking one side politically, so they either sponsor both conventions, or neither. Conventions could see new sponsorsThe Democratic and Republican conventions this summer are the first fully in-person conventions since the 2016 election. Democratic convention organizers in April said if corporations had any reluctance to back the RNC, it hasn't hampered Chicago's efforts to lure donors. Microsoft in 2012 contributed over $1.5 million in a mix of in-kind and cash contributions to the Republican convention. JPMorgan donated $200,000 to the 2012 Republican convention and didn't write a check for the 2016 event.

Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii claimed not to know that attendees could choose her in a poll to pick Trump’s potential running mate, while South Dakota Gov. The jockeying to become Trump’s vice presidential pick, playing out behind the scenes for weeks if not longer, spilled into the open at this week’s CPAC, the country’s annual gathering of conservatives. The various approaches to campaigning for the job were on full display inside CPAC, and it’s uncertain which will win over Trump. “Last year, when everyone was asking me if I was going to consider running for president, I said no. “Because anything could happen to Trump.”But he conceded it was a fool’s errand trying to guess whom Trump might pick.

CNN —When special counsel Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court to reject former President Donald Trump’s immunity claims there was an unmistakable hue of urgency to the request. It could grant Trump’s request and then hold arguments and decide the merits of the immunity issue – perhaps on an expedited basis. The Supreme Court can move quickly, at least by judicial branch standards. George Walker IV/APThe Supreme Court denied that request, allowing the appeals court to review the case first. "Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled last Friday that "unborn children" are included in a state law allowing for wrongful death lawsuits by the parents of deceased children. Trump's post followed waves of criticism from President Joe Biden and other Democrats, who say the Republican ex-president's involvement in canceling longstanding abortion rights laid the foundation for the Alabama ruling. At least three IVF clinics in the state paused their fertility treatments following the ruling, out of concern about their legal exposure. Democrats accuse Republicans of seeking to further erode abortion access and threaten related rights, pointing to the Alabama ruling as evidence.

NEW YORK (AP) — Blake Snell won the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday after leading the majors in ERA for the San Diego Padres, becoming the seventh pitcher to earn baseball's top pitching prize in both leagues. Snell, the American League Cy Young Award recipient in 2018 with Tampa Bay, joined Gaylord Perry, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Roy Halladay and Max Scherzer as pitchers to win in both leagues. Harnessing his 95-96 mph heater and overpowering curve, Snell won eight of his last nine decisions and did not allow a run in five of his final six starts — including the last three. The four previous San Diego pitchers to win the Cy Young Award were Randy Jones (1976), Perry (1978), reliever Mark Davis (1989) and Jake Peavy (2007). The AL Cy Young was to be announced later Wednesday evening.

The rally in the Cuban American stronghold of Hialeah is aimed in part at boosting Trump's support among Hispanics in Florida, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said. Trump's support among Hispanics, the fastest-growing ethnic and racial group in the U.S. electorate, swelled during his 2020 campaign. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll in September 38% of Hispanic respondents said they would vote for Biden, while 36% picked Trump. The Biden campaign isn't sitting on its hands. "It's a political persecution just like Venezuela and Nicaragua,' said Fabio Andrade, a Colombian-American businessman who helps organize Hispanic voters as part of a “Republican Amigos” club.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy speaks during the party's Florida Freedom Summit held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida, U.S., November 4, 2023. In an interview, Ramaswamy said he would formally introduce a pledge on Tuesday in Miami, on the eve of the third Republican primary date, laying out non-interventionist foreign policy principles. Ramaswamy's introduction of the pledge comes after weeks of sparring with fellow Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the UN, over foreign policy. Ramaswamy has said Haley, who ranks third in most Republican primary polls, risks dragging America into a bloody conflict thanks to her aggressive foreign policy stances. According to polling and analysis website FiveThirtyEight, Ramaswamy has the support of 5% of Republican primary voters, while Trump is the lead with roughly 58% support.

Trump’s defense lawyers, in a flurry of legal motions, have argued that the case by Special Counsel Jack Smith "attempts to criminalize core political speech and political advocacy." At trial, legal experts say Trump will likely not be allowed to argue to a jury that his conduct was protected by his First Amendment right to free speech because such legal questions are resolved by the judge. Those claims complement his political case as an anti-establishment crusader whose movement is opposed by powerful foes seeking to silence him. Criminal defendants can use the defense to argue they sought legal opinions and did not intend to break the law. Three former Trump lawyers have already pleaded guilty in Georgia, including Kenneth Chesebro, who drafted memos crafting the fake elector scheme.

Arizona is one of eight competitive seats Democrats will be defending in 2024 as they try to protect their narrow 51-49 Senate majority. Lake is closely aligned with Trump, who so far leads the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Arizona shares around 370 miles (600 km) of its border with Mexico and immigration is sure to be one of the main topics in the Senate race. "There is an invasion at the Arizona border RIGHT NOW.

Playing a quiet but important role in shaping the governor's remarks was the Washington-based Heritage Foundation, America's top conservative think tank, according to two people with knowledge of their interactions. The range and frequency of those discussions with DeSantis' campaign have not been previously reported. In addition to Carmack, the policy director, at least seven other Heritage staffers have taken positions in the DeSantis campaign. Whether DeSantis' connection to the think tank has been helpful for his campaign is an open question. Following the controversial March 13 statement, Heritage officials had a suggestion for the campaign, according to one person with knowledge of the discussions.

In recent weeks, as mortgage rates closed in on 7%, affordability has worsened. Nationally, it takes about 36% of the median household income to make the average mortgage payment — more than the recommended 30% allowance for housing. The Mortgage Credit Availability Index fell by 3.1% to 96.5 in May, the lowest level since January 2013, and was essentially unchanged in June. The MBA index that tracks jumbo loans — loans that are larger than conforming loan limits — saw its second monthly contraction, as some financial institutions reduce their appetite for larger loans that aren’t backed by the government. Mortgage rates are expected to drop the second half of this year as inflation continues to cool, with economists and housing analysts forecasting rates to end the year around 6%.

Ron DeSantis officially launched his presidential campaign Wednesday, putting his blend of pro-business conservativism and culture-war populism to the test at the national level. In the most recent legislative session, DeSantis signed a bill that stopped union dues from being automatically deducted from public employees' paychecks. Ron DeSantis, a critic of environmentally sensitive investing, didn't succeed in protecting his constituents from the ravages of Hurricane Ian, which may have been intensified by global warming. DeSantis signed a bill in early May barring state and local officials from making ESG-based investment decisions. The Disney sagaApparel promoting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sit on a table before a book tour event at the North Charleston Coliseum on April 19, 2023 in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Ron DeSantis moved Friday to disqualify the federal judge overseeing Disney 's political retaliation lawsuit, alleging the judge's comments in previous cases raise doubts about his impartiality. Disney filed a civil lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Tallahassee, Florida, after the company's development deals were nullified by a board of supervisors that DeSantis had picked to oversee the district that includes Walt Disney World. DeSantis had replaced the board with his preferred picks after he and his allies targeted Disney's special tax district. In doing so, the judge had "used the State's contemplated dissolution of Disney's special district as an example of retaliatory conduct," DeSantis' lawyers argued. "The Court's comments seemingly reflect its opinion on whether the State punished Disney's speech by revoking Disney's 'special status,'" they wrote.
Both Haley and Ramaswamy are trailing former President Donald Trump, according to the latest public polls. Team Stand for America's filing says the group received individual donations from wealthy donors ranging from $5,000 to $16,600. The joint fundraising committee finished raising over $4.3 million, while the Haley campaign itself brought in around $5.1 million, according to FEC records. Team Stand for America transferred about $1.8 million to the Haley campaign on March 31, according to the records. Leonard Stern, the CEO of real estate firm Hartz Mountain Industries, contributed the same amount as Hamm to Team Stand for America in March.
Some in-person clinics in New York, California and Kansas will offer mifepristone for now, but are preparing to provide an alternative abortion pill if a subsequent decision essentially bans the drug. U.S. abortion pill providers are scrambling to make backup plans as the Supreme Court decides whether to keep restrictions on the key drug mifepristone. Those restrictions will limit access to mifepristone even in states where abortion is legal. Some in-person abortion clinics in states where the procedure is legal told CNBC that operations will remain largely the same. Other clinics in states where abortion is legal can prescribe mifepristone off-label beyond the first seven weeks of pregnancy, according to Hill.
Brad Little, Governor of Idaho speaks on the 2nd day of the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) Washington, DC conference at Gaylord National Harbor Resort & Convention. Brad Little on Wednesday signed a bill into law that bans adults from helping minors cross state lines to receive an abortion without the parents' consent. Under the law, any adults who helps a minor obtain an abortion pill or a surgical procedure within Idaho or across state lines commits "trafficking," punishable by up to five years in prison. Abortion remains legal in states neighboring Idaho such as Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Montana. The Idaho law is the first to restrict interstate travel to obtain an abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before his speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center on March 4, 2023 in National Harbor, Maryland. The Manhattan panel is probing a $130,000 payment Trump's then-personal lawyer Michael Cohen gave porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before Election Day 2016. That grand jury could resume work on Monday. Trump's legal team earlier this week lost a last-ditch effort at the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia to block a Corcoran's ordered appearance. Those investigations are taking place even as Trump is seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
The New York City grand jury that is weighing whether to criminally charge former President Donald Trump is set to resume work Thursday after an unexpected day off. Cohen and Daniels both have said that the $130,000 he gave her was to keep her from talking to journalists about her claim of having sex with Trump once in 2016. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is known to be considering whether to ask the grand jury to indict Trump for violating New York state law by allegedly misclassifying the reimbursement to Cohen as a legal expense. But it can be elevated to a felony if a business record is falsified to cover up another crime. Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal crimes that included breaking campaign finance law by facilitating the Daniels payment to keep her from harming Trump's chances of winning the 2016 election.
